Reminder that you can build it under pretty much any windows version now, from XP+, x86 or x64, no need to use a seperate XP VM for building any more!

If you track down WRK 1.2 there's a ton of docs included which go into detail of different kernel components.
Besides these there's also "Inside Windows NT" & "Windows Internals" books that might be useful

I have installed Visual Studio 2010 under my Windows XP x64 build machine and when running the command h2inc.exe with your parameters and hitting the ACCESS VIOLATION condition, a question pops up to allow me to debug in Visual Studio, it displays the C code with the current execution position, and I can inspect variables

It looks like it is failing to create a temporary file

Can't quite figure it out why it crashes - looks like a small change to h2inc.c though

Not in my case, last I checked it took me ~1hr20min in win7 x64 VM while raw win10 x64 lets me build in ~50 minutes

mktemp modifies the input string, maybe under 32-bit the input string is being put in some memory that doesn't have write permission or some stupid shit (since it'd be a const char* after all)

I can't see anyone else having similar issues with access_violation & mktemp though so maybe not

Fuck so my PC is retarded ahah. I was able to get under 1h on win7 and 1.20+ in win10. Basically the opposite of you. Maybe you have better CPU, my old 2600k have only for core

Hm, I'm using 3570k so very similar, maybe a tiny bit improvement

I also have spectre/meltdown shit disabled, and removed mcupdate_GenuineIntel.dll so it's only using my bios microcode instead of the spectre one that fucks up performance

I did not disable meltdown/spectre and I would like to upgrade to 3770k but they fucking expensive still, If I have to spend 150 bucks for an old processor I better keep the money and buy a new PC! I shall try to disable meltdown spectre temporarily and see what happen...

There was for 3570k at least, table here mentions it as 306A9 https://support.microsoft.com/help/4090007/intel-microcode-updates

With mcupdate DLL in place "Update Revision" in registry shows as 1F, but removing it puts it at 17, which is my bios microcode I guess

Yep or rename it just in case you want to restore it, then restart

If you open regedit and go to
>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\CentralProcessor\0
You can see the Update Revision listed there, see if it changes after you remove it

Build finished, no errors using all the tools besides h2inc & rc (as the rc there seems a lot different to rc/rc16 we run thru DOS player)

Oh, looks like main difference is updated rc doesn't let you output as EXE, all the params seem the same besides that
